The Marches landscape is dominated by three factors: the sea with a coast rich in elegant, historic centres; the mountains rich in fields, beech groves and cultivated terraces; and the country with over 100,000 country dwellings where, for thirty years, a large proportion
of the one and a half million inhabitants have now lived. This diverse landscape
offers us a vast selection of wine and food produce. The Brodetto, fish soup full of different varieties of coastal fish; the Piceno Ascoli Olive, recently dubbed with the Denomination of Protected Origin. Valdaso Fruit, peaches, cherries, apricots and plums exist in large quantity and variety; Piceno Chestnuts that make up 90% of the whole regional production; Truffles whose ideal habitat is in the immense stretches of mountain woodland and in
particular in the territories of the Sibillini and Tronto Mountain Communities;
fresh egg Pasta, for which the local speciality is Campofilone maccheroncini, served with meat or fish ragout; Olive Oil, that in the Province of Ascoli Piceno accounts for almost half the entire regional
production of extra-virgin oil; Wines and Spirits that, thanks to the excellent exposure of the vineyards on the Piceno hillsides
which catch the warm sea breeze and are protected by the Monte della Laga, produce
very fine white and red wines. The two DOC wines Rosso Piceno Superiore and Falerio dei Colli Ascolani along with Pecorino and Passerina, which are made purely from native grapes. Stronger alcohol includes Anisetta Meletti, the historic Ascoli tipple, Mistrà and Vino Cotto.
